Working Holiday Visa (subclass 417)
Your First Working Holiday Visa
To be eligible for the Working Holiday Visa you must:
- hold a valid passport from an eligible country (list).
- be between 18 to 30 years old inclusive / 18 to 35 years old inclusive for Canadian, French and Irish citizens.
- apply online from outside Australia.
- not be accompanied by any dependent (ex: children).
- not have previously entered Australia on a subclass 417 or 462 visa.
Duration:
You must enter Australia no later than 12 months from the date the visa was granted. When you make your first entry into Australia, the visa is activated and is valid 12 months.
You are allowed to travel to and from Australia as many times as you want during this period, however, the period of time you have spent outside Australia cannot be recovered.
Work/Study Conditions:
You can usually work for up to 6 months with one employer and study for up to 4 months (17 weeks). The 6 months are based on the length of time, not how many hours or days.
If you work, tax will be withheld from your pay. As a working holiday maker, you are not a “resident for tax purposes”, therefore the first $37,000 of your income is taxed at 15% and the balance is taxed at ordinary rates.
If you are eligible, your employer also has to pay superannuation for you.
When you leave Australia, you can apply to have your super paid to you as a Departing Australia Superannuation Payment (DASP), a tax of 65% is applied.
Financial requirements:
You must have enough money to support yourself while you are in Australia. This is usually about AUD5,000 for your initial stay, plus the fare to where you are going after leaving Australia.
Health insurance:
Unless your home country has a reciprocal healthcare agreement with Australia, it is highly recommended to have a health insurance as you are personally liable for all your healthcare costs.
